Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium

We visited the museum yesterday and decided to have lunch in the cafe before exploring. My son is anaphylactic to peanuts, tree nut and sesame. He wanted to have a children’s pre packed lunch, the sandwiches were pre wrapped in a refrigerator with a label listing all allergens. When we got to the till to pay, I wanted to double check that any ‘May contain’ warnings would be declared in the label too. The cashier was very helpful and she called the cafe manager over to speak with us, we were reassured that any ‘May contains’ were listed, but the manager said that If we wanted then she would make us a fresh sandwich for my son herself. She said that she would make it in a separate area of the kitchen, with new clean boards, knives, gloves etc. nothing was too much trouble. We felt very confident that my son was in safe hands, she ‘got it’. We will definitely be going back to the cafe soon, and highly recommend it for anyone with allergies.

Sandwiches and Jacket potatoes

I went to the cafe upstairs at the Science Centre with my son who has serious allergies to various nuts and sesame. I asked for the allergy folder- the junior staff found it quickly and said they were going to get the supervisor. The supervisor (Gina) went through all the food with me, and agreed to make my (fussy!) son a toasted sandwich which wasn’t on the menu with safe ingredients. She explained it would be made by her in a designated area of the kitchen. I was made to feel reassured and that the staff were happy to help- not the case everywhere.
