This week, our social media manager Beth shares her top tips on how to navigate weddings if you have an allergy or specific dietary requirements.

Beth’s Top Tips

As someone with allergies, attending a wedding can be difficult.

It’s not as simple as just attending and having a good time. If you have an allergy, intolerance or coeliac disease, you will have a lot more things to consider.

I thought it would be useful to share a list of “top tips” for how to attend a wedding safely as someone with allergies (I am allergic to tree nuts, peanuts and sesame):

Communication:

Let your friends know about your allergy in the RSVP card. Give your friends enough warning so they can try and cater for you. Communication is key.

Safe snacks:

Bring some safe snacks just in case you don’t feel comfortable eating the food on offer or you feel peckish and there are no safe snacks around. It’s always better to be safe rather than sorry.

Do your research:

Research the venue and see if they are listed on our site beforehand. You can see reviews from people with allergies and understand a bit more about how good they are at dealing with dietary requirements.

Phone the venue ahead:

Phone the venue beforehand, as this might help put your mind at ease. Our dining out guide might also offer you some additional tips!

Double check all the drinks:

Just like food, drinks contain allergens too so make sure you double check what drinks are on offer and what drinks are safe for you before accepting a drink at the reception or during the dinner.
